    A Tale of Two Droughts

There’s a bad kind of drought and a good kind of drought in our state right now. There’s also some good news about both to share tonight. The first is the drought in the traditional sense – the extreme lack of rainfall over the past half-year in the western half of Oklahoma. The other is the extreme lack of severe weather, specifically, tornadoes, in our area as well. Here’s more about both and why they are related to one another.      ...More >>

    Weather Whiplash This Week

We began our Monday with record-shattering cold all across Green Country. This was the coldest reading Tulsa has hit this late in the season in fact. This was the ninth freeze in April – another record shattered for Tulsa. Most Aprils, we don’t dip below 32° at all! We’ve been waffling between winter and spring weather over the last two months and the back and forth may not be fully over yet.

It felt like a weekend out of December. We woke up Saturday to snow on the ground (and an earthquake) with record low temperatures. Wind chill values dipped into the teens and even single digits in part of the area (see below). Those temperatures dipped below freezing area-wide again Sunday morning as well.  Hopefully you haven’t planted anything too early because this weekend might have done that vegetation in.

Winter Isn’t Done With Us Yet

We were just 2° shy of a record low this morning as temperatures dipped into the 20s for much of Green Country. It was a hard (28°) and even killing freeze (24°) for some as you can see below. A late freeze won’t do much to stunt our greening process, but can shrivel up our sensitive plants. And we aren’t done with freezing temperatures yet.

From smoke in the air to rain and lightning, we’ve seen a big transition in our weather this weekend. It’s the start of an unsettled pattern that may last well beyond Easter Sunday. Not only are a few severe thunderstorms in the mix, but so are the risks for flooding and even a few snowflakes. As has been the case the last couple of years, March will be going out like a lion.                 The fi...More >>

From a Cold to Stormy Start to Spring

Temperatures on Monday took a big downward turn behind a strong early spring storm system. It mostly spared Green Country from severe weather, but we’ll feel the effects of it for the next few days as colder air continues to filter into the region. As we flip the season over to spring officially on Tuesday, we’ll still be stuck in this more winter-like set-up. But that will be changing significantly before Spring Break week is over.

The sunshine has been welcome in the past couple of days after nearly a week of ice, flooding and downright gloomy weather. The rain was incredibly welcome considering our drought, but it was too much of a good thing in areas east of Tulsa where major river flooding occurred along the Illinois River. By Thursday, we’ll know the full impacts of the rainfall on the current drought when the new Monitor is released. In the meantime, we’re focused on a two-day rainy spell for G...More >>

Winter has gone easy on us recently. Even with a cold start in the teens and 20s Sunday morning, temperatures rebounded (by 45° or more) in the afternoon with highs in the 60s. A cold front Sunday night is sending those readings plummeting into the 20s with wind chill values dipping to as cold as 10° for the start of our Monday. Even if moisture is missing, it’s clear our weather is acting up and won’t be settling down for a while.

It’s hard to believe we are talking thunderstorms just days after parts of Green Country had actual temperatures below 0°! The removal of the persistent eastern U.S. trough in the jet stream can be thanked for our dramatic warm-up this weekend. In this new pattern, another storm system is pushing in from the West. Instead of bringing Arctic air, this storm system is more like a spring one, drawing up Gulf moisture and warmth, which will clash along a cold front and dryline in ou...More >>

Our temperatures are on a wild ride in Oklahoma this month. Day-to-day, we are seeing 15° or more swings. This is not atypical for the start of winter as the powerful polar jet stream sinks further south, creating more powerful storm systems and bigger air mass changes as a result. The one thing our recent pattern hasn’t brought is moisture. As we continue to dry out, wildfire danger grows and becomes a daily concern. December sure isn’t feeling quite like… December. With highs near or at 70° over the last couple days, we are kicking off meteorological winter on about the warmest note possible. We’re not alone in the lack of winter conditions. Less than 10% of the Lower 48 is currently covered in snow and most of that 10% is at high elevations. See for yourself, below. However, that is about to change in a big way this week.

We have closed out a beautiful holiday weekend here in Oklahoma. Clear and dry weather dominated with cool nights and very mild days. All this warmth is deceptive to our growing proximity to Christmas. (less than a month away!) Unfortunately, Indian Summer days often come with enhanced fire risk. This is especially true here in the third driest November on record for Tulsa. As the winds increase Monday, we could have some big issues on our hands.
