INDEPENDENCE, KS - The rough economy means turbulent times for Cessna.  The News on 6 has learned the airplane manufacturer is shutting down all of its assembly plants in late June for about four weeks.

A spokesman called the move a company-wide furlough aimed at matching production and goals. 

Cessna is also laying off 1,600 employees companywide, including 100 at their plant in Independence, Kansas.  The company hopes to eventually add jobs the Independence plant, but that's a ways down the road.

Cessna says it's still delivering airplanes and no one at its service centers will be furloughed.
