Police: Mother of Abandoned Baby Lied About Kidnapping

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Police said the mother of a 7-month-old abandoned baby concocted a kidnapping story to cover her tracks.

Amy Owen is accused of concealing stolen property and child abandonment after an Oklahoma City police officer noticed a suspicious looking parked car in an Oklahoma City neighborhood early Monday morning. The officer said he saw Owen get out of the vehicle and walk towards the back of Mark Miller's home.

"I'm real glad the officer was inquisitive about a car parked erratically, parked the wrong way on the street and a few feet off the curb and questioned it," Mark Miller said.

As the officer investigated, police said Owen and her accomplice, Cory Hall, walked several blocks up the street leaving behind the car with Owen's 7-month-old baby girl inside. Police said Owen then approached a house and knocked on the door. The family inside called 911 and told authorities, "there's a lady screaming outside our front door hollering about her baby and trying to give us a phone number, and we're afraid to open the front door."

According to a police report, Owen stated her baby had been kidnapped, but police quickly realized she was lying and found the baby in a car seat covered up by two large strollers and toys.

"When I arrived there were 10, 12 police cars out front, and the baby was in our home. And our friends taking care of the baby at that time, she had said the baby smelled a little bit like alcohol," Miller said.

Police said Owen and Hall were in the area looking for homes or cars to burglarize.

"I can't imagine leaving my son in the car unstrapped with a stroller and other stolen goods on top of him," Miller said.

Police said Owen has previously had three DUI convictions, and after Monday's arrest Owen's husband was granted an emergency VPO. The baby is now in his care and a relative said Tuesday that the little girl is safe and being taken care of.

Owen is in the Oklahoma County Jail. Hall is out of jail, but could not be reached for comment.
