OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said a tractor-trailer carrying horses overturned on the Turner Turnpike, killing 11 of the animals.
Horse Trailer Wreck |
Troopers corralled about 20 horses that escaped from the trailer of about 30 horses after the crash.
OHP Trooper Jerrad Real said he had to put down three injured horses with his gun. He said other passers-by stopped to help herd the horses that survived and move them to safety. Those horses will be turned over to Oklahoma City's animal control department.
No human injuries were reported in the wreck.
Troopers investigating the crash said the driver was coming into Oklahoma City on the Turner Turnpike and fell asleep at about 6 a.m.
The wreck blocked an entrance ramp to the Turner Turnpike Tuesday morning and authorities closed the ramp from northbound Interstate 35 to the turnpike.
