Dozens Receive, Donate Pet Food At Humane Society Of Tulsa

TULSA, OK -- Dozens of people lined up Sunday to get free food for their pets, and dozens more stopped by to donate food. 

The Humane Society Of Tulsa held its first Oklahoma Pet Food Pantry event.

It says a lot people have fallen on hard times and they're being forced to give up their pets just to pay the bills. 

So on Sunday, workers handed out free bags of food to people in need. One couple, who lost their jobs more than a year ago, drove from Tahlequah to get help.

"Most people consider their pets as part of the family and you know, to put them up for adoption is hard to do. This helps keep us from doing that," said Henry McCrery, who is a pet owner.

Oklahoma Pet Food Pantry events will be held the second Sunday of every month as long as the Humane Society is receiving pet food donations.

To receive aid you'll need to show identification and provide proof your pet has been spayed or neutered. If your pet hasn't been spayed or neutered and you are in need of help, the Humane Society will direct you to a low cost option.

Pet owner participation in The Oklahoma Pet Food Pantry is meant to be temporary. The Humane Society will offer aid to a person for six months. After six months of being in the program, your status will be reevaluated to see if you're still in need of help.

Get involved with the Oklahoma Pet Food Pantry:

• Donate pet food.
• Ask your company or favorite store if you can put in a collection bin for food or donation bank for money. The Humane Society Of Tulsa can provide these to you.
• Volunteer your time to distribute food on the second Sunday of each month. Volunteers are also needed to drive and collect donations.
