Despite Tulsa Police Nearby, Two Are Shot When Gunman Opens Fire

TULSA, OK – Two people were injured when a gunman opened fire in a crowd of people near 61st and Peoria Tuesday night, according to Tulsa Police. 

Tulsa Police say a fight broke out between two groups about 9:30 p.m..  Officers said one group was in a strip shopping center and another was at an apartment complex. The two groups were yelling back and forth when someone opened fire.

Officers had stopped a car for drug paraphernalia nearby when they heard the shots ring out.

"No doubt the suspects saw the police there," said Travis Yates, Tulsa Police.  "They did not hesitate, they still fired the rounds."

Yates said about ten rounds were fired, injuring two.  One victim was shot in the chest and was taken by EMSA to a Tulsa hospital. The other victim was taken by personal vehicle.

This is the same area where Tulsa Police responded to an apparent murder-suicide last week.

"We have lots of good people in this area, but we have a few people that don't belong here, that cause problems for the good people," Officer Travis Yates said.

There is no word on the victims' conditions. Their names have not been released.
