TULSA, OK -- Former Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor spent Thursday talking education.
She told a lunch crowd at the Tulsa Press Club it's imperative to increase the number of students who are college and career-ready. She also discussed how important it is for students to understand how education affects everything from public safety to fixing potholes.
"I figured out, it's kind of the full circle," Taylor said. "If we can fix this problem, the other problems kind of fall in line."
Since leaving office, Taylor has been supervising the state's application for Race To The Top. The program provides federal funding to states willing try to innovative education reform measures. Oklahoma didn't make the cut earlier this year, but Taylor says new legislation and a more rigorous curriculum should help the state's chances this time around.
Oklahoma should find out next month if it is a finalist.
