EDMOND, Oklahoma -- The family of a man who was killed while riding his bike by a hit-and-run driver is reaching out to the community for any help they can get.

Alan Spencer, 56, went out for a bike ride on July 17 but never came back home. According to Oklahoma City Police's Homicide Unit, Spencer was hit and killed by a motorist traveling near the 12500 block of N. Midwest Boulevard. Police said the car fled the scene and Spencer died as a result of the crash.

Police said what makes the investigation more suspicious is that the driver should have seen Spencer riding his bike because there was nothing along the road to block the driver's view.

"There were some suspicious circumstances surrounding the event that were unusual that it raised their suspicion that they wanted homicide to look at it," said Oklahoma City Master Sergeant Gary Knight.

In the three weeks since the crash, no one has come forward with information regarding the crash, and now the Spencer family is desperate for answers. Thursday, friends and family, with help from the community, met at the Memorial Road Church of Christ in an effort to gather information about that day. The family said the goal is to split up into groups and go door-to-door in the neighborhoods around where Spencer was hit.

"We are trying to connect with people who might know anything or might remember something weird that day," said Heather Spencer, Alan Spencer's daughter. "They might notice that a neighbor is not driving a car anymore, really anything. We just don't want this terrible thing to become something of the past or unsolved."

The group is posting signs in the area that read, "Do you know something" with a phone number to Oklahoma City's Homicide Hotline.

"If it was anyone else in our family that had gotten hit by a car riding a bicycle, my dad would have done this two weeks ago, so we are way behind him, but he would have done all of this too," said Candace Brooks, Alan Spencer's daughter. "We'll be OK because we know God, and we love God, but it's hard, it's hard. You think about them constantly."

In addition to the search, authorities are continuing to reach out to the public to help them determine who was driving the car that hit and killed Spencer.

Anyone with information regarding this incident should call the homicide tip-line at (405) 297-1200.
