SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma -- The city of Sand Springs says its street department crews are ready for winter.

In a news release, Sand Springs says employees have serviced their snow plow and sanding units, stockpiled 400 tons of sand and planned out their plowing and sanding routes that focus on arterial and collector streets.

"If a significant winter storm is imminent, the affected departments and divisions get briefed in advance on what is expected and plan coordinated responses should problematic situations arise," Public Works Division Supervisor Carla Hayes said. "We've had a lot of success in dealing with the elements by getting plans in place before the storm hits."

Hayes says the city works closely with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation and Tulsa County to assure highways and roadways near the city limits are getting plowed and treated.

When local schools are in session, crews will focus on those areas for student safety.

The release goes on to say the December 2007 ice storm and the 2009 Christmas Eve blizzard stretched Sand Springs' response capabilities to the limit.

Hayes added that budget reductions in recent years have required innovation and cooperation among several city departments and divisions to keep the sanders, plows and support equipment rolling.
