Some Improvement Soon

Posted: Updated:

This is the coldest morning so far with the current arctic outbreak.  Single digit temps are common place but the good news: light wind this morning is resulting marginal wind chill values.  A few clouds are present across the southern part of the state this morning.  A mostly sunny sky is expected today, but a few clouds cannot be ruled out later with highs in the lower 30s.  The cloud deck across southwestern OK may travel northeast into our area by midday.  Regarding the freezing temperatures:  Many locations are working on 106 consecutive hours of below freezing as I post this discussion.

Friday and Saturday will offer some relatively nice weather regarding our temperatures with afternoon highs moving into the 40s.  But this will be a short lived deal, as another in a series of arctic fronts will impact the area late this weekend. The GFS buf files are hinting at low level moisture return late tonight and early tomorrow, and also Saturday morning.  I don't think this will be too big of a deal with the lack of snow and ice cover across the region.  Some areas may see some fog late tonight and early Friday morning.  This would be a major headache in terms of freezing fog potential, but currently the areas of major concern for this would be to our north across south central Kansas.  Its something I'll be monitoring closely in the data.

Regarding the weekend weather: Temperatures Saturday will move into the 40s with south winds before the next system arrives Sunday.

The first boundary will slide southward across northern OK Saturday before stalling or lifting northward Sunday.  The southern part of the state will have a slight chance of showers or snow showers Saturday night into Sunday morning, then rain chances will spread northeast across the far eastern part of the state Sunday.  Our chances may increase in the data over the next few days, but I have this probability currently at 30% for the Sunday period.

Monday the boundary will move northward for most of the day before completely moving southward Tuesday bringing temps back down into the cellar for Tuesday and Wednesday.

The EURO data is also suggesting one more arctic surge late next week before we begin to warm by the end of the month.
