TULSA, Oklahoma – If there was "one shining moment" in Tulsa's spring game, it probably came from wide receiver Jameel Owens.

Early in the second half, the Oklahoma transfer and former Muskogee standout made his only catch of the day by leaping above two defenders and hauling in a 32-yard pass from Shavodrick Beaver at the 5-yard line. It was the longest pass of the day, and set up a touchdown run by Alex Singleton.

"He made a nice catch, and he's adapted to our system very well," head coach Todd Graham said.

The catch gave TU coaches a glimpse of the big play ability that the former high school All-American brings to the field. Owens' 6'3", 229-pound frame gives him a size advantage over most defensive backs, but he and the coaches know that there is plenty of room for improvement.

"If I would have known the offense a little better, I would have had a better outcome," Owens said. "But from what I did, I think I played great. It feels good getting to be out here with a new family and learning the offense with the TU players."

"He's a big, physical, strong guy. He's not in the shape he needs to be in yet for our system, but we're really pleased with him. He's going to be a great one," Graham said.

New offensive coordinator Chad Morris is particularly pleased with the sophomore wide receiver.

"He's a young man who has started off strong, and as he continues to learn the system and learns the offense, he is only going to continue to get better," Morris said. "I think it is critical for him to have a great summer program with our kids."

Owens, who redshirted with the Sooners last year, applied for a hardship waiver and hopes to play immediately. He said the NCAA should make a ruling by early May, and added that he will continue to prepare as if he will be playing this season.

"Me and GJ (Kinne) are going to get together in the summer, do a lot of drills, and work alot," Owens said.
