GLENDALE, Arizona – University of Oklahoma Senior Associate Athletic Director Kenny Mossman said in a statement Monday that linebacker Ronnell Lewis has been discharged from the hospital.
Lewis was hospitalized Saturday night after suffering a head injury during the Sooners’ victory over Connecticut in the Fiesta Bowl. He stumbled off the field after covering a kickoff return and appeared disoriented before making it to the sideline. He remained in the hospital for tests all day Sunday.
Mossman also said Lewis will return to Oklahoma later Monday and that his prognosis is “good,” according to OU Head Athletic Trainer Scott Anderson.
Oklahoma Sports’s Toby Rowland reported Saturday that Lewis was hospitalized for precautionary reasons and had to be transported because the stadium did not have the proper equipment to perform the necessary tests.
Mossman’s statement said Lewis’ injury was a mild concussion, but head coach Bob Stoops told Oklahoma Sports’s Dean Blevins Sunday it was a neck injury. Stoops said the injury would take a considerable amount of time to recover and was similar to the one that sidelined former Sooner Brody Eldridge for much of last season.
