WACO, Texas – The No. 13 Oklahoma women fell into a huge early deficit and never recovered in a 92-70 loss to No. 1 Baylor Wednesday.

The Sooners (16-5, 6-2) avoided inside presence Brittney Griner and instead tried hitting outside shots to start the game. The strategy did not work. OU made only one of its first nine shots, six of which came from behind the 3-point line.

The stagnant start allowed Baylor (20-1, 7-0) to go on a 17-2 run to start the game, and things only got worse from there. The Sooners only scored 17 points in the first half, and after another run in the second half Baylor led by as much as 39.

Griner came into the night averaging almost five blocks per game, but recorded only two against OU. However, she still altered the Sooners’ game plan and dominated on the offensive end. She finished with a game-high 29 points and attempted more free throws (15) than the entire OU squad combined (11).

OU attempted a total of 30 3-pointers on the night, including 17 from Aaryn Ellenburg. She made seven and led the Sooners with 27 points, while Danielle Robinson scored 25. Whitney Hand added 11, but the rest of the team combined to score a total of just seven points.

The 22-point margin of defeat is by far the Sooners’ worst of the year and marks their second loss in three games. They will try to recover when they return to Norman for their next game against Iowa State.
