Cowboys Drop First Contest against Dallas Baptist

STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- The Oklahoma State Cowboys were unable to snap their losing streak Tuesday against Dallas Baptist, falling 7-3.

The Patriots’ (4-0) bats started the game off quickly. Sophomore Austin Elkins liked the first pitch he saw and sent it over the left field wall to take a 1-0 advantage in the first at-bat of the game.

Oklahoma State’s (3-1) scored its first run in the next half-inning, capitalizing on DBU miscues. Zach Johnson advanced to scoring position on a fielding error and scored in the next at-bat on a Dane Phillips single to tie the game.

Four innings later, the Dallas Baptist offense went to work yet again.

Back-to-back doubles to start the fifth inning by Tyler Robbins and Jason Krizan gave the Patriots a one-run advantage. Two at-bats later, Krizan scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly in the next at-bat gave Dallas Baptist a 4-1lead.

Krizan kept adding to the scorer’s sheet in the top of the seventh. After Robbins walked to start the inning, Krizan knocked an RBI triple to right field to extend the lead to four runs. Joel Hutter brought him home with a double in the next at-bat, giving DBU a five-run lead.

Both teams would add one run each in the eighth, but Oklahoma State didn’t threaten late.

Dallas Baptist’s Jordan Staples (1-0) was credited with a win, allowing two earned runs on two hits in his five innings of service. Josh Nielson (0-1) received a loss for the outing, despite pitching just one-third of an inning. With his one out he allowed three runs on two hits and walked one.

Oklahoma State will try get back to winning at 4 p.m. Friday against the Cal Poly Mustangs.
