Tulsa’s David Cason Leaving for Vanderbilt

TULSA, Okla.—University of Tulsa assistant basketball coach David Cason is leaving TU to take a similar position at Vanderbilt University.

Cason spent three years as an associate head coach for the Golden Hurricane and a total of six years on staff with the program.

“David has been an integral part of our basketball program since our first year at TU. Being able to join his college head coach and coach in the SEC will be another step in his goal of becoming a collegiate head coach,” said Wojcik. “He has done a tremendous job at Tulsa, and will do the same at Vanderbilt. David, Tamara and the kids are family. We wish them the very best in their new endeavor.”

“It’s extremely difficult for my family and I to leave The University of Tulsa. TU has become such an important part of our life and we have enjoyed our six years in the Tulsa community. I owe so much to Coach Wojcik for the opportunity he presented me with six years ago,” said Cason. “This was a very tough decision, but we felt that it would be a good career opportunity as I look to some day become a collegiate head coach.”

In his six seasons, the Golden Hurricane posted an overall 123-78 record, advanced to the Conference USA Championship Game twice, won the inaugural post-season College Basketball Invitational (CBI) Championship in 2008 and made appearances in the 2009 and 2010 NIT post-season tournaments.
Last season Cason was recognized as the conference’s top assistant coach by a FoxSports.com survey of Conference USA coaches.

During Cason’s tenure, the Hurricane posted four straight 20-win seasons (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010) and won 25 games in the consecutive seasons of 2008 and 2009.

Cason was appointed to the Golden Hurricane coaching staff on April 6, 2005. Before joining each other to coach at Tulsa, Cason and Tulsa Head Coach Doug Wojcik were on the same coaching staff together at both Notre Dame and North Carolina.
