TULSA, Oklahoma – For Union wide receivers Christian Hood and Stephon Weaver, the greatest play of their lives was just like old times. The duo hooked up for the game-winning touchdown on a trick play against Jenks in the 6A title game Friday night.

“It worked out perfect,” Hood smiled after the game.

Jenks scored a touchdown to take a 47-44 lead with few precious moments left to play in the game.

That’s when Hood and Weaver worked their magic.

“We ran a bubble (screen) and the defense committed,” Weaver recalled. “The corner came up. I just threw the ball to ‘Hoodie’ and he did the rest.”

Weaver let it fly, and 28-yards later it landed softly in Hood’s hands. The senior trotted into the endzone to complete the epic comeback. The Union players swarmed around Hood in the endzone as the Redskins’ faithful went berserk in the stands. Jenks players hung their heads as they walked off the field.

“Those guys have been making that play since they were in grade school,” said Union head coach Kirk Fridrich. “Those kids kept bugging us about it and we got to run it in the state finals.”

The play gave Union its third straight 6A gold ball. Although he won’t be around for any more, Hood grinned at the idea of what’s to come for his younger silver and red teammates.

“I’m part of the only team who ever won three in a row, but it means more to pass something on to next year,” he said. “Next year would be a four-peat.

“It feels nice to leave knowing I left something for the younger guys.”
