CLAREMORE, Oklahoma – On Wednesday, both Bishop Kelley and Shawnee opened the state tournament with impressive offensive performances. The Comets scored 18 runs against Guthrie and the Wolves scored 11 runs against Carl Albert.

Those wins put both of those teams into the state quarterfinals. They met in that round on Thursday. And while the offense stole the show again, it was only one of the two teams that had the bats working.

Bishop Kelley started off the game by having their first 6 batters reach base. They ended up sending 12 men to the play in the first. And when all the damage was done, 7 of them had scored. The 2nd inning was almost an exact replay for the 2 teams. The Comets sent 10 men to the plate in the 2nd with 5 of them scoring.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Shawnee couldn’t get anything going against Bishop Kelley pitcher Chris Rhoads. Rhoads struck out the side in the 1st, and then started a nice double play to get out of a mini jam in the 2nd. And he, along with the rest of the Comets, were on cruise control after that.

Fortunately, the damage didn’t get too much worse after the 2nd inning. But, that was more than enough as Bishop Kelley picked up the 16-0 win.

That win puts the Comets into the state semifinals. They’ll be back in action on Friday at 4:00 PM in Claremore. Shawnee moved into a consolation bracket game against Carl Albert. The winner of that contest will play the Comets with a trip to the state championship game on the line.
