TULSA, Oklahoma -- Fire heavily damaged a vacant house in the 1600 block of South Elwood early Thursday.
The Tulsa Fire Department says the fire, which started near the home's fireplace just before 2 a.m., had spread into the home's attic and basement by the time firefighters arrived.
Fire officials say this type of fire is very common when temperatures drop. They say homeless people break into vacant homes looking for a place to stay warm and may have started a fire in the fireplace.
Since no utilities were hooked up to the home, fire investigators were called out to find the cause.
