SAND SPRINGS, Oklahoma -- The first of two Civil War encampments was held Saturday in Sand Springs, marking the 150 year anniversary of the War Between the States.

The Sand Springs "battleground" was unusual in that the sounds of cannon and musket fire came from the heart of downtown, at the Page Triangle. Re-enactors representing Confederate and Union troops were staged across from the Sand Springs Cultural and Historical Museum which is hosting the "Civil War 150" exhibit.

Veteran artilleryman re-enactor Arthur Street of Coweta demonstrated his Civil War Blakely cannon.

A second encampment will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, October 8 on the Triangle. The museum exhibit continues Tuesdays through Fridays from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through October 18.

Sand Springs is 10 miles east of a site where many believe the Battle of Round Mountain took place in 1861.
