October Begins with 5-Star Weather

Posted: Updated:

It has been days since we've seen a cloud in the sky, and very little changed as we entered the month of October. If we disregard the drought for a moment, there's really nothing we can complain about with these early fall weather conditions. Cool nights, mild days, low humidity, light winds, and clear skies have all graced the state of Oklahoma this weekend.

Despite the quiet weather pattern, there are some interesting things to share with you. Thanks to the dry air and clear skies, temperatures swung 40° or more from morning to the afternoon highs. Take a look at the map of low and high temperatures for Saturday. Nowata had a frosty start to the day, but warmed all the way to a relatively balm 77°. Just for comparison, the average high and low temperatures only vary by 22° in Tulsa here at the start of October.

There is a deep low pressure system in the Mid-Atlantic that brought an early season snowfall to portions of West Virginia this weekend. Beyond that, a Category 4 Hurricane, named Ophelia, is bypassing the island of Bermuda. There is certainly active weather to be found, but not here in Oklahoma.

So when do we see a pattern change here in the Southern Plains? All of this sunny, mild weather is nice, but the toll it takes on the drought-ravaged land of Oklahoma continues to rise. Fortunately, another deep low-pressure system will move ashore the West Coast this next week. This could bring a real dose of heavy rain to our region by next weekend. It's a long ways out and things can change, but this appears to be a rather promising prospect.

Enjoy the calm weather while it's here. Winds will pick up next week in advance of the next storm system and daytime temperatures will continue to warm. It's just a sign that no type of weather can stick around Oklahoma for very long. Oh, except for that miserable, mind-melting summer heat! Thank goodness we're done with that!
