OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Oklahoma City-based alternative rock band Flaming Lips has recorded a six-hour song to raise money for the Central Oklahoma Humane Society and the University of Central Oklahoma's Academy of Contemporary Music.

The band said in a statement Monday that about $20,000 has already been raised after fans donated $100 each to hear their names spoken by Sean Lennon -- the son of the late John Lennon -- during "Found A Star On The Ground."

The song itself will be contained within a newly developed toy called a "Strobo Trip," which the band describes as a "multi-sensory phenomenon" including music and lights. The "Strobo Trip" will be available via the band's website and will also feature two shorter songs.

Publicist Rick Gershon said Tuesday that lead singer Wayne Coyne is a longtime animal rights advocate and that he wants to give back to the community by helping young musicians.

"The homeless animal situation in Oklahoma City is at an all-time high -- the worst I've ever seen" Coyne said in the statement.

"The Flaming Lips love all creatures -- it's always been part of our philosophy," he said.

Coyne said the funds raised will also help the music academy to purchase the latest in musical equipment and technology.

"When we were a young band starting out, we didn't have any kind of outlet to help us make necessary connections. This school helps provide the students with a connection to all aspects of a supportive music community.

The academy offers Associates of Applied Science degrees in music performance, music production or the music business.

The release date of "Found A Star On The Ground" has yet to be announced.
