The Tulsa Threat Women's Tackle Football team held tryouts and practice Saturday, gearing up for the 2012 season.

It's the second year for the professional women's football team, and they're hitting the field with a new name and all new coaches.

Head Coach Craig K. Gaines, known as Coach Gator, said the time is right for the team that represents Tulsa. Players come from the Metro area and surrounding cities as well. They have a schedule of four home and four away games.

"We're getting there, and I know that we can be a viable, viable team and an asset to Tulsa," Gaines said.

His players range from age 18 to 40. Ashley Moran is quarterback.

"Last year we had a tough time, but we made it through as a team," she said. "We have a great core."

She said the women's league gives female athletes a chance to try their hands at a sport not traditionally open to women.

"It's something that we haven't gotten to do our entire life, and now we have this opportunity to go out there and play, and show that we can play the sport and do it just as well," she said.

The team is in need of a home stadium, Gaines said. They practiced Saturday at the Union 8th Grade Center.

The women aren't playing for money or fame, their quarterback told The News On 6.

"We're all out here just for the love of the game right now," she said. "We have just a ton of heart."
