Oklahoma State Caps Off Sweep Of Jayhawks

Oklahoma State held off the Kansas Jayhawks Sunday for their fourth conference win of the season.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys capped off the series sweep of the Kansas Sunday, knocking off the Jayhawks 4-2 for their fourth conference win of the season.

Oklahoma State took a solid lead early, after Jared Womack singled up the middle in the second at-bat of the game, Robbie Rea doubled to left field to bring Womack home and take a 1-0 lead. Three at-bats later, Gabe Weidenaar singled through the left side to bring Rea home and pushed the lead to two runs.

The Jayhawks scored their first run of the game in the top of the third to cut into the Cowboys' lead.

Back-to-back singles put Ka'iama Eldridge on second base and a Kevin Kuntz sacrifice bunt advanced Eldridge to third base. James Stanfield grounded out to second base bringing Eldridge home to close the deficit to 2-1.

The Cowboys earned back the run in the bottom of the sixth, set up by a leadoff triple by Trey Whaley. Gabe Weidenaar grounded out to short shot, bringing Whaley home and pushing the lead back to two runs. Kansas cut the lead back to one run, but a Robbie Rea sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the seventh pushed the advantage back to a comfortable 4-2.

Vince Wheeland (2-0) pitched 6.2 innings for the Cowboys, giving up just two earned runs on six hits and striking out four to earn a win in his 6.2 innings of service for OSU. Thomas Taylor (3-4) received a loss, giving up 6.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on seven hits.

Oklahoma State go for four straight in Big 12 play, heading to Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns in a three-game weekend series.
