Tulsa Voters Will Be Asked To Fix Error In City Charter

TULSA, Oklahoma -

Tuesday's ballot in Tulsa will include an amendment to the new City Charter that will bring it back in line with state and federal election laws.

City officials say when Tulsans voted last November to change the way city elections are held, the amendment erred in failing to change a deadline for candidate filing dates. The error means there is not enough time for the city to hold up to three elections as required by law.

Because of that error, the City's current election schedule for filing dates, primary, run-off and general elections conflicts with both state and federal election laws, according to Megan McCann, City of Tulsa. The schedule must be changed to confirm with state statute.

Voters will be asked to correct the issue Tuesday by voting to remove the word "September" from Section 2.2 of the new City Charter and by changing the candidate filing period from July to April in Section 3.4.
