Escape The Oklahoma Heat Inside A 'Cool Zone'

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

Those 100 degree temperatures are already upon us here in Oklahoma. That's why OGE Energy Corp has partnered with several non-profit organizations to develop "Cool Zones."

Cool zones are designated sites where anyone can go to escape the heat and avoid heat related illnesses. For seniors and others vulnerable to heat-related problems, a Cool Zone can be a lifesaver.

Cool Zones are located in structures such as libraries, churches and senior citizen centers to offer air conditioning and cold bottled water to those who don't have access to these essential items. OGE Energy Corp and partner organizations are urging residents to "be a cool neighbor" and keep an eye out for those around you who may need who need help cooling down this summer.

Temperatures above 90 degrees can be very dangerous, especially when the humidity is also high.

Proper precautions can help prevent heat-related illnesses:

• Keep Cool: Spend as much time as you can in cooler surroundings, such as a cooler room in your home.

• Air Conditioning: An air-conditioned site can provide lifesaving relief from heat stress, especially if you have a medical condition like heart disease.

• Cooling with Fans: Air movement reduces heat stress by helping to remove extra body heat.

• Baths and Showers: Cool baths or showers (with water temperatures around 75 degrees) provide relief from the heat. Cool water removes extra body heat about 25 times faster than cool air.

• Clothing: Wear lightweight, light colored, loose fitting clothing in hot weather. Wear a hat or use an umbrella to protect your head and neck when you are outdoors.

There are more than 200 Cool Zone locations in the Oklahoma City metro area.
