HOUSTON, Texas -

Minnesota Vikings star running back Adrian Peterson was arrested early Saturday morning in Houston after he allegedly shoved an off-duty police officer and then "assumed an aggressive stance."

Peterson, who is from Palestine, Texas, was held in a Houston jail on a charge of resisting arrest and $1,000 bond, according to information on the Houston Police Department website. The Houston Chronicle reported Saturday afternoon Peterson posted bond and was released hours after his arrest.

According to the Chronicle, the 27-year-old football star got into an argument with an officer working an extra job at Live! at Bayou club, 534 Texas Ave., just after the club closed at 2 a.m.

The officer approached Peterson, who was talking with a group of people next to the bar, as he began clearing the club, Houston Police Department spokesman Kese Smith told the newspaper.

"The officer informed Peterson and the group that the bar was closed and asked them to walk toward the nearest exit," Smith said.

The officer moved on and then returned to Peterson's group, which was still talking at the bar, then asked the group, once again, to leave the establishment, the Chronicle reported.

"That's when Peterson told the officer that the group had heard him the first time and pushed the officer in the shoulder, causing him to stumble," Smith told the Chronicle.

The officer told Peterson he was under arrest, but the football star began yelling at the officer, Smith told the Chronicle.

"As the officer attempted to place Peterson in handcuffs, Peterson pulled away from the officer and assumed an aggressive stance," Smith said.

Another officer stepped in to assist, but Peterson struggled with both, drawing a third officer into the mix, the newspaper reported.

Peterson was taken to the city jail, where he complained of shortness of breath, and Houston Fire Department medical personnel who examined Peterson said he was fine, Smith told the paper.

Daniel Maher, general manager of the club, told celebrity news website TMZ.com that Peterson was very drunk and was a difficult customer all night.

Maher told TMZ Peterson was throwing his ego around and making people mad, so they put him in the VIP area. According to Maher, when the club was closing, Peterson rushed over to the bar to try and order one last drink and "tried to intimidate the bartender" into selling it to him, TMZ reported.

Maher told the website that's when he intervened, but Peterson continued to be "unreasonable." Maher told TMZ the off-duty policeman then intervened, and Peterson proceeded to shove him.

To TMZ, Maher backed up the police spokesperson's account of the incident and said during Peterson's confrontation with the officer, Peterson assumed a fight stance and looked "like he meant business."

"He looked really scary and I thought he was gonna attack the cops," Maher told the website.

Vikings team spokesman Bob Hagan told the Associated Press that the Vikings "are aware of the situation and are gathering more information."

Peterson tore his left antierior cruciate ligament in December 2011. Later tests showed he also tore the medial collateral ligament in his left knee. Peterson has said he hopes to be back by the beginning of the 2012 NFL season, but some reports have deemed that unlikely.
