September 22, 2012. I feel that's a date many Oklahomans will circle on their calendars following the heat of this summer. On that date, at 9:49 a.m. CDT, we welcome Fall. And while that specific hour and minute won't trigger an immediate change of temperature, it's the mindset of welcoming a season filled with cooler temperatures, more rain, college football, NBA basketball (Thunder Up!) and (at least for me) an official countdown to Christmas.
While I don't really claim any one season as my favorite, I rarely go into Fall with a bad attitude. The trees turn some magnificent colors, cold fronts actually have meaning, and it's a time when you can go without an air conditioner/heater. You know, one of those "windows open" type of seasons. Those are my favorite. Early Spring is the same way. Plus, even though we've seen some nasty winter storms in the past few years here in Oklahoma, you can sense a genuine excitement from some Oklahomans about the prospects of snow. Sure, it'll only be September, but with the Holidays quickly following, it's hard NOT to have that mindset.
I write this blog in the middle of our July heat wave to reassure you relief is on the way. Maybe not right away, but July will turn to August before you know it. School will start for the kiddos, football games will fire back up, and before you know it, you'll be reaching for your coat before you start the day.
