One Injured In SW Side Police Shooting

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

Police department officials say their officers were forced to open fire in a crowded grocery store parking lot, Thursday.

Witnesses say they heard at least a half dozen shots, all aimed at one man. The suspect was being treated at OU Medical Center late Thursday.

The shooting occurred at the Buy For Less grocery store at SW 59th and Walker in Oklahoma City. The entire parking lot was a crime scene for several hours early Thursday evening.

Police say at least two officers shot a man after he pulled a weapon

"I've been working on the south side for quite a while now," witness Huzaifa Rizwan said. "I've never seen anything like that before."

Eyewitnesses recalled what they saw moments after hearing the gunshots.

"I saw a couple of cop cars and the guy laying down on the [ground], and I was not sure whether he was gone or hurt," Rizwan said.

Officers say they saw a man walking in circles through traffic near SW 59th and Walker shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday. When an officer made contact with the man, police say he displayed an aggressive posture which put the officer on edge.

"The officers were responding to [a] check the welfare of [the suspect] walking around in the middle of the street," Capt. Dexter Nelson with Oklahoma City police said. "[The suspect] walked into the parking lot."

More police were called when the suspect was in the parking lot of the Buy For Less. When more officers arrived, police say the man pulled a weapon. Police won't say what the weapon was.

Police shot the man who was rushed to OU Medical Center via ambulance. No one else was hurt.

Homicide investigators and internal affairs are working the case and looking for more witnesses to come forward.

"There's a lot of traffic, a lot of potential witnesses that drove by," Nelson said. "If anybody saw anything, we'd appreciate it if they called the police department and let us know."

Police say, at some point, the officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The suspect is being identified as a 35-year-old man.
