Adoptable Pets To Be Featured At Tulsa City Council Meetings

TULSA, Oklahoma -

Tulsa's city council room will see a different kind of visitor starting Thursday, January 10. City councilors will feature an adoptable pet from Tulsa Animal Welfare at the first meeting of each month.

In 2012, 11,500 dogs, cats and other animals came to Tulsa Animal Welfare, according to manager Jean Letcher. Sixty-two percent of those animals were euthanized.

Councilor G.T. Bynam spearheaded the new policy after hearing from colleagues in other towns that it was a successful way to promote pet adoption.

"We as a community should always be striving to reduce the number of animals euthanized at our shelter," Bynum said.

One dog and one cat will be featured each month.

To help reduce the number of animals euthanized, Letcher recommends pets be spayed or neutered and kept inside or confined.
