Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events Begin Friday In Tulsa

The Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Society has four days of events scheduled to celebrate the life and legacy of the civil rights leader. Highlights include an annual peace walk, interfaith service and the annual MLK, Jr. parade downtown.

Friday, January 18

MLK Student Leadership Forum and Youth Awards will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Dream Center auditorium, 200 West 46th Street North. The awards ceremony recognizes youth who have participated in the MLK speech, essay, art and oratorical contests.

Saturday, January 19

Performance of "Two Cousins Walking Through Faith," 2 p.m. at the Booker T. Washington Historical Site, 1514 East Zion. Tickets are $5 plus a canned food donation at the door. Children 5 and under are admitted free. Canned goods will go to the Community Food Bank of Tulsa. The play was written by Tulsan Mary Scott Hicks, first cousin to Coretta Scott King.

Sunday, January 20

A Walk In Peace procession will form at 7th and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at 5:15 p.m. and leave promptly at 5:30 p.m. for Boston Avenue United Methodist Church at 13th and Boston. Shuttle service from the church to the start of the peace walk will be provided.

Interfaith Commemoration Service will follow the peace walk at 6 p.m. at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, 13th and Boston. Guess speaker Dr. John Nunes, President of the Lutheran World Relief and the 2013 winner of the MLK Oratorical Contest will recite the "I Have A Dream" speech. Nursery service is available.

Monday, January 21

The 2013 "Let Hope Inspire The Dream" MLK Jr. parade begins at 11 a.m. at the corner of Detroit and John Hope Boulevard in downtown Tulsa. The parade route advances east on John Hope Franklin Boulevard to Greenwood and turns south through the Greenwood Business District to Archer. The parade then goes west on Archer to Elgin.
