Metro Couple To Be Honored At OSU Basketball Game

Posted: Updated:
STILLWATER, Oklahoma -

Wednesday night a metro couple will be honored at Oklahoma State's basketball game in Stillwater. Jeff and Lisa Murray are cancer survivors who battled the disease at the same time. She battled breast cancer while he fought prostate cancer. Two years after their diagnosis, they are both cancer free.

Before tonight's game against Iowa State, the two will be honored in a special Coaches vs. Cancer ceremony with head men's basketball coach Travis Ford.

"It's an honor to be able to help recognize all the cancer survivors and all the fundraising Coaches verses Cancer does in their organization," said Jeff Murray. "It's an honor to be able to go up there and be part of this deal tonight. I'm really looking forward to it."

Jeff and Lisa have been married for almost 17 years and they have a 9-year-old daughter, Elaina. The two found out only two weeks apart back in the spring of 2010 that they both had cancer. She was treated at INTEGRIS Cancer Center while he was treated next door at the ProCure Proton Therapy Center.

It's been two years since they received their last treatment. Jeff says doctors are happy with their prognosis and the couple goes in every six months for a check-up.

Jeff says the most important thing for people to understand about their experience is how to prevent it in their own lives.

"The biggest thing is to get people out and to get your annual exam whether it's your physical or mammograms," said Murray. "Anything they can do to help get advanced diagnosis because early detection is key in any type of illness you have especially cancer. Just because you have cancer doesn't mean it's a death sentence, it can be a learning experience for a lot of people."

That's something the couple hopes people can take away from them. While tonight's game will be a battle with winners and losers, when it comes to cancer, this couple proves that prevention and teamwork with health care professionals is a hard opponent to beat.
