The Tulsa Zoo broke ground Thursday morning on its first major project since 2002. The event was for the new Mary K. Chapman Rhinoceros exhibit.

The zoo says the $3.1 million exhibit will replace the outdated 38-year-old exhibit with a state-of-the-art home for the zoo's resident white rhinoceroses, Jeannie and Buzbie.

The new exhibit will consist of a three-acre yard and an 8,925-square-foot barn.

It will take a year to construct.

Terrie Correll, CEO of Tulsa Zoo Management Inc., says this exhibit will help the zoo become a world class facility. Correll says they hope to add more rhinos and to one day participate in rhinoceros breeding programs.

The next item on the list will be a Lost Kingdom exhibit which will feature tigers, leopards and exotic birds.

The Mary K. Chapman Rhinoceros Exhibit was funded through a public-private partnership between the City of Tulsa, Tulsa Zoo Management, Inc. and private donors.
