Magness' Walk-Off Homer Gives Evangels 3-2 Win Over Southern Nazarene Before Falling 6-0 To Falcons

Posted: Updated:

Jake Magness hit a game-winning, walk-off homer in the 10th inning to propel the Mid-America Christian University Evangels to a 3-2 victory over the Southern Nazarene University Crimson Storm Tuesday afternoon (Mar. 12) at James Curtis Field. The Evangels later fell 6-0 to the Friends University Falcons.

Magness' winning blast came with one out in the 10th to snap a 2-2 gridlock and make a winner of reliever Blaine Garriot, who pitched a scoreless top of the 10th.

MACU starter Dalton Majors was outstanding, striking out seven and allowing only two runs on four hits in nine innings of work.

Thomas Shellhardt gave up two runs in 5 2/3 innings and was relieved by Matt Berry with two outs in the sixth. Berry threw 2 1/3 shutout innings with two strikeouts.

Trailing 1-0 in the second following an RBI double by Zach Friesen, a two-run single by Christian Hill scored Brandon Spainhour and JP Seifried in the bottom of the inning that put the Evangels on top.

The Crimson Storm then tied the score in the fifth inning when Jacob Inbody stole home following a walk to Austin Samulowitz.

From there, Majors settled into a groove and blanked the Crimson Storm on only two hits over his last four innings.

The Evangels were then shut out in their second game against Friends by starter Kyle Flax and a host of five relievers. Flax allowed only two hits, but walked six batters in four innings, while the Falcons' bullpen held the Evangels scoreless on only four hits in five innings of work.

Brett Lamb started strong for the Evangels, holding the Falcons scoreless for the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. RBI singles by A.J. Borja and Casey Schweninger put the Falcons on top and Borja added another RBI single in the fifth as part of a two-run inning that made it 4-0.

Schweninger hit another RBI single in the sixth and Zach Ashford homered in the seventh.

Z Tipton and Trent Daniels each had two hits for the Evangels in the second game.

Garriot built on his scoreless inning in the opener by blanking the Falcons over the final 2 2/3 innings.

The Evangels will next play one week from today (Mar. 19) at Bacone College starting at 1 p.m. in Muskogee, Okla. The two schools split a doubleheader earlier here this season (Feb. 19).
