COLLINSVILLE, Oklahoma -

A small plane crashed Sunday evening in downtown Collinsville, killing at least two people.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has confirmed "at least one fatality," and the Collinsville Police Department confirmed there were fatalities, but wouldn't comment on the number.

The aircraft crashed into the back yard of a home minutes before 6 p.m., near 14th and Broadway Streets, which is one block north of Main Street. Neighbors said the was vacant.

Witnesses said the crash sparked a small fire, but fire crews put it out quickly.

"It did spiral," witness Jerry Gaghins said. "It went sideways to the side, tilted to the side and then went nose down into the backyard of a vacant home."

A representative with the Federal Aviation Administration told News On 6 the aircraft was a single-engine Mooney that had just departed from Tulsa International Airport and was headed to Manhattan, Kansas. It dropped off of FAA radar at 5:52 p.m.

Its tail number was not made available Sunday night.

According to flight registry information, a fixed-wing, four-seater, single-engine Mooney, last registered to Ronald L. Marshall in Nebraska, departed from Tulsa International Airport at 5:47 p.m. and was scheduled to land in Manhattan, Kansas, just after 7 p.m.

It was the only flight that left Tulsa for that destination on Sunday, according to flight records.

The FAA said investigators are en route to Collinsville and the National Transportation Safety Board investigator will arrive Monday. The NTSB will be in charge of the investigation because it was a fatal crash.

"We saw it in the air when it popped, a couple of things fell off and the wings really looked strange, like they folded in and it nosedived right behind the house," Stephanie Coldren said.

Identities of the victims were not immediately released.

No one on the ground was injured.
