Ft. Sill Soldiers Volunteer To Clean Up Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge

A group of soldiers based at Fort Sill have been volunteering their Saturdays to help clean up areas in the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge.

Most recently, the soldiers helped repair a perimeter fence damaged during Wednesday night's storm. They've also helped remove Eastern Red Cedar trees -- which can crowd out other plants and trees and absorb so much water that creeks and springs are left dry.

Pvt. Cody Gilmour told The Lawton Constitution that he's been to the refuge each Saturday since Jan. 26 and that soldiers who accumulate 100 hours receive the Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.

Gilmour noted that he's surpassed 117 hours and is hoping to reach 150 hours.
