OKLAHOMA CITY -

Imagine for a moment living your life in darkness. Oklahomans will now have a chance to dine in the dark, not only for the unique experience, but also to help raise awareness of blindness and visual impairment.

The Heartland Council of the Blind is a non-profit organization that serves the blind and visually impaired in central Oklahoma. The organization will host its 5th Annual Dining in the Dark event on May 18, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, located at 1700 N.E. Street in Oklahoma City.

The reception begins at 5:30 p.m. Event organizers say there will be a silent auction, and one of the items will be a Thunder basketball signed by Kevin Durant.

Several other activities will take place during the reception, including educational and adaptive equipment exhibits, and challenge stations where guests can experience walking with a cane through an obstacle course, pouring a glass of water, putting a key into a lock, all while blindfolded.

After the reception, organizers say the guests will be blindfolded and escorted to their tables. A blind dining guide is at each table to help guests find their food, and give helpful hints such as salt is heavier than pepper, answer guests' questions, and keep conversation going.

The dinner will be provided by Persimmon Hill Restaurant of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum.

For more information about the event, visit the Heartland Council of the Blind's Facebook page.
