My 2 Cents: A Scarlet Letter For Uninsured Drivers

Posted: Updated:

People currently driving a car or truck without insurance, and who get caught, will have to wear a scarlet letter, of sorts. Actually their vehicle will.

They're going to take the license plate off right there on the side of the road, and slap a bright yellow sticker on there, telling everyone you've been driving without insurance.

And that's not all. A badly needed new law does, either.

When they paste that sticker on your car, and you drive off, at that moment you start paying a daily rate for temporary insurance and you have just 10 working days to get a state-required insurance policy.

I talked with Insurance Commissioner John Doak Thursday who pushed hard for this law, and he says it's a good step toward reducing the one out of every four Oklahoma drivers who are uninsured and who might crash into your car and leave you holding the bag for the repairs. It's happened to me twice.

So starting Nov. 1, drivers who get stopped without insurance here's what it's going to cost. A $250 fine, $125 in fees, another $250 or so for temporary daily insurance, that's $625 bucks. And they still have to buy an insurance policy to get their license tag back or their car will be impounded.

Cheaper just to get the insurance to begin with. That's the point.

I'm Kelly Ogle and that's My 2 Cents.
