Mountaineers Rout Sooners

CHARLESTON, West Virginia -

Oklahoma couldn't hold off West Virginia Saturday as the Mountaineers hit lights out at Appalachian Power Park for a 9-3 win over the Sooners.

West Virginia (28-20, 10-7 Big 12) scored three unearned runs in the sixth inning and added five two-out scores in the eighth to stifle Oklahoma's opportunity at a second straight rally.

After allowing two base hits to begin his start, OU's Jake Fisher (1-2) retired 16 straight Mountaineers in order with the help of two double plays by the Sooner defense.

A third attempt to keep the streak alive floundered when Garrett Carey missed wide right of Hector Lorenzana's glove while attempting to throw out Taylor Munden at second base off Brady Wilson's fielder's choice. The error allowed Munden to reach third base and Jacob Rice plated the WVU shortstop with a fielder's choice the next at-bat.

Ryan Tuntland homered in the next at-bat, both plating Wilson and scoring West Virginia's game-winning run.

Oklahoma closed the gap to 4-3 in the top of the seventh after getting three straight two-out singles from Craig Aikin, Max White and Matt Oberste, who batted in Aikin.

The run ended Dan Dierdorff's (4-5) stint on the mound but the Sooners would not put a runner into scoring position until Aikin reached second with two outs in the ninth.

Pitching in relief, Ralph Garza retired two to start the eighth inning, but the Mountaineers finished scoring five runs from six hits, including a two-run home run from Ryan McBroom.

West Virginia scored the first run of the game after opening with a single, bunt single and sacrifice bunt to put leadoff hitter Munden on third. Munden scored when Tuntland grounded out to Lorenzana and Fisher finished the inning with a strikeout of McBroom.

Oklahoma answered in the top of the fourth when Anthony Hermelyn hit a bloop single into right field and Jack Mayfield, who doubled down the left field line the previous at-bat, scored.

Carey scored a second run in the fifth after being walked. Aikin followed with a hit-and-run single through the left side and Max White surprised the Mountaineer defense with a bunt down the third base line that was thrown wide at first, allowing Carey to reach home.
