RedHawks Drop Series With Monday Loss Against Cubs

Posted: Updated:

The Iowa Cubs blasted two home runs and received strong pitching all afternoon as the Oklahoma City RedHawks fell 6-1 in their series finale before 5,255 at Principal Park Monday afternoon.

With the loss, the RedHawks (18-12) lost two of three in their abbreviated series in Des Moines, marking just the second series they've dropped during the 2013 season.

Edwin Maysonet opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning when he hit his first home run of the season—a two-run shot out to left field to give Iowa (11-17) a 2-0 lead.

Two more runs followed in the third for the I-Cubs. Brian Bogusevic delivered an RBI triple and Maysonet struck again with an RBI double.

The RedHawks got on the board in the fourth inning. Jonathan Villar got on base with a bunt single and proceeded to steal both second and third base. Andy Simunic brought Villar home with an RBI single to make it 4-1.

Both teams went quiet until the seventh inning. Josh Vitters crushed a two-run homer on an 0-2 pitch from Wes Musick, as Vitters hit his second home run of the series and gave Iowa a 6-1 lead.

Although the RedHawks tallied eight hits, all were singles and they went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. For the series they struggled with runners in scoring position, going 3-for-25.

Trevor Crowe, Carlos Perez, and Villar each led the RedHawks with two hits. Villar also stole two bases and scored the team's only run.

Making a rehab start for Iowa, Chicago Cubs pitcher Matt Garza went 3.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits. He struck out three with no walks.

Chris Rusin followed Garza and earned the win. Rusin (2-3) scattered three hits over five scoreless innings with no walks and two strikeouts.

RedHawks starting pitcher Ross Seaton ended up with the loss. Seaton (0-2) gave up four runs and eight hits over five innings. He walked one and recorded a season-high six strikeouts.

The RedHawks return home Tuesday night to begin an eight-game homestand against the Tacoma Rainiers at 7:05 p.m.
