OKLAHOMA CITY -

A man managed to escape his burning southwest Oklahoma City home early Friday morning when the beeping of a smoke detector alerted him that his house had caught fire.

The man was renting a house in the 1500 block of S.W. 46th Street, between Penn and Blackwelder. He says he was sound asleep when the smoke detector woke him up around 1 a.m. He says when he opened his eyes, he saw smoke filling his entire house.

The man made his way to the garage where the fire started. He tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out the flames, but that didn't work. That's when the man called 911.

Firefighters rushed to the scene and quickly put out the fire.

The man inhaled a lot of smoke, so paramedics treated him at the scene. He's expected to be all right.

Firefighters say an electrical problem may have started the fire.

"[The] occupant advised he's had problems with a light switch in a garage and reported last week to his landlord," said Major Rocky Burt with the Oklahoma City Fire Department. "That does appear where it started."

This is the second time this house has caught fire. It's not known what caused the first fire.
