Hundreds and hundreds of students from the suburbs are using "open transfers" to enroll in the premier high schools and middle schools in the Oklahoma City school district. The district has allowed it for years, but I say it's wrong they should be filled only with students who live in the OKC school district.
Here's what you had to say.
H.J. says the district does a poor job informing students about these opportunities: "There isn't enough information available to parents regarding how to transfer their kids. I didn't know these schools were available to my kids when I lived in OKC."
But Carl writes: "If there are not enough qualifying students from OKCPS then it is fine with me to allow out of district students."
Alistair transferred in from Moore to Harding Prep and says: "I applaud Harding's effort to attract students from all over."
Margaret, a Harding teacher says they try to recruit OKC students: "OKCPS is very protective of these bright students and reluctant to share information that might cause these students to change schools."
And Barbara, a Classen SAS parent, writes: "Classen is only allowed to go "recruit" and get the word out if the other school invites them first."
But Mary, who had children at Classen says: "I know other families whose children were just as bright and talented as mine, living in the district, who were never accepted even after applying several times."
