Cleveland County Offers Free Tetanus Shots Wednesday

Residents in Moore sifting through what's left of their homes, and emergency workers searching through the debris face a serious dangerous in the aftermath of Monday's deadly EF-5 tornado: tetanus.

The tornado reduced homes, schools and businesses to nothing more than large piles of twisted metal and nail-studded pieces of wood. There's a high risk survivors, emergency responders and volunteers could cut themselves on debris. Doctors say those puncture wounds could lead to tetanus, a serious infection that can cause muscle spasms of the jaw and spine.

To keep first responders and the public healthy throughout the clean-up efforts, the Cleveland County Health Department is offering free tetanus shots Wednesday, May 22. People who want a shot can go to 424 S. Eastern from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The health department will also provide WIC services. The agency will only be open for these limited services.

Health officials say the department does not need volunteers at this time. Anyone with medical experience who wishes to volunteer should go to the Oklahoma Medical Reserve Corps website at http://www.okmrc.org/.
