TULSA, Oklahoma -

The local Alzheimer's Association spent the day out at ONEOK Field, trying to break a world record. As part of "Strike Out Alzheimer's," volunteers spent several hours throwing as many pitches as they could, before the Driller's game started.

The current record is 11,600 pitches. Hornsby, the Drillers mascot, threw in the 12,000th pitch Saturday.

"We are thrilled at Tulsa's response to both our and the Driller's first attempt to break a world record," said Lindsay Jordan, senior director of development for the Oklahoma Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. Jordan said more than 74,000 Oklahomans and their caregivers are affected by the disease every day.

Volunteers from other organizations also helped out - including some church groups, and junior ROTC.

The group wasn't going to stop at 12,000 - they were on pace to set a new world record between 15,000 and 16,000 pitches by Saturday afternoon.
