OKLAHOMA CITY -

In the wake of the May 19 and May 20 tornadoes that killed 26 people, including seven students at Plaza Towers Elementary School in Moore, Oklahoma City's mayor has formed a task force to review public and school safety procedures.

Mayor Mick Cornett says the task force will examine all options in regard to safety during storms and severe weather. The task force will be comprised of Oklahoma City Council Members Pete White and David Greenwell, whose wards were hit by the May 20 tornado; Oklahoma Secretary of Education Janet Barresi; Xavier Neira, Oklahoma Director of Development for Manhattan Construction; and Harold Roberts, Chief Operating Officer of ASTEC Charter Schools.

Cornett says more members will be added to the task force to ensure a wide-range of views about storm-related safety.

"We want to look at the issue from every possible angle to make sure we are doing what is right and appropriate to safeguard our community and our schools from extreme weather events," said Cornett. "Our top council priority is to provide a safe and secure community."

Cornett said he would like the Task Force to look at everything from emergency plans and procedures to possible infrastructure improvements.
