Iowa Outlasts RedHawks

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

The Oklahoma City RedHawks tallied seven extra-base hits, including two home runs, but they were not enough in a 7-6 loss to the Iowa Cubs Monday in front of 3,469 at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

The seven extra-base hits by the RedHawks Monday exceeded their total from their previous five games combined as Oklahoma City (33-28) and Iowa (29-34) opened a four-game series.

Monday's loss ended a three-game home winning streak for the RedHawks, who returned to downtown Oklahoma City after spending 21 of the last 25 days on the road.

Robbie Grossman and Marc Krauss each went 3-for-4 for the RedHawks. Grossman had two doubles and one triple. Krauss hit his ninth home run of the season.

Iowa's Brad Nelson hit two home runs and now has four homers in the last two games.

Iowa grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Nelson's solo home run to center field led off the inning. A two-RBI single from Logan Watkins put Iowa in front, 3-0. Iowa loaded the bases with two outs, but a diving catch at the right field line by RedHawk Andy Simunic ended the half inning.

Krauss got the RedHawks on the board when he led off the bottom of the second inning with a solo home run.

A single from Jose Martinez scored Carlos Perez to cut Iowa's lead to one run later in the inning.

Jonathan Villar hit a two-run home run to left field for a 4-3 Oklahoma City lead in the third inning – his fifth of the season.

Grossman stole home with Jake Elmore batting for a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning.

Iowa's Ian Stewart doubled to score Junior Lake and Darnell McDonald doubled to score Stewart for a 6-5 Iowa lead in the fifth.

Dave Sappelt singled to score Luis Flores for a 7-5 Iowa lead in the eighth inning.

A RBI single by Krauss scored Brett Wallace with two outs to cut Iowa's lead to one run in the bottom of the ninth. Che-Hsuan Lin was caught stealing second base to end the game.

Pitcher Philip Humber (0-2) made his third start of the season with the RedHawks and allowed six runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings. He walked three and struck out three in the loss.

Iowa starting pitcher Yoanner Negrin (1-2) got his first win of the season after allowing five runs on 10 hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked two.

Iowa took a 7-2 lead in the season series, as the teams played for the first time this season in Bricktown.

Oklahoma City's current series against Iowa continues with an 11:05 a.m. game Tuesday at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.
