LOGAN COUNTY, Oklahoma -

A property owner just north of Waterloo Road found a thick, tar-like substance leaking onto his property from a nearby asphalt company.

Dave Seitsinger says it has continued to spread since Thursday when a rental tenant notified him of the spill.

"It's bad," said Seitsinger. "I don't know what's in this tank."

The tank apparently sprung a leak this week and spilled a thick black substance onto his land, so he contacted an environmentalist to test the substance and discuss what could be done. Several animals that have wandered into the area have become stuck in the muck and died.

"Here's where I found the duck. There were dead turtles and dead snakes and a dead squirrel," said Seitsinger, as he walked the area.

Diane Freeman owns a home nearby. She has contacted the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) because of the leak. She wondered if it could impact nearby homes, including hers.

"It's just not acceptable to me and I'm not going to watch animals or worry about my well water where I had a well drilled. I just have several concerns and I just want to make sure they're following the codes," said Freeman.

With rain in the forecast over the next few days, they're worried the leak could expand even more.

"We need a remediation, a company and specializes in clean up. To come in and take a sample of what's here and clean it up," said Seitsinger.

News 9 was not able to get in touch with the company that owns the bordering property where the leaking tank sits.

Seitsinger says a company rep contacted him late Friday afternoon, but he has not been able to get back in touch with the company. He hopes the DEQ will get involved and force the company to properly clean up the mess.
