Zephyrs Edge Past RedHawks In Series Finale

Posted: Updated:
Metairie, Louisiana -

The New Orleans Zephyrs hit a key pair of solo home runs, including one off the foul pole that ended up being the game-winner, as the Zephyrs defeated the Oklahoma City RedHawks 3-2 before 8,211 at Zephyr Field Friday night.

Unlike the previous games in the series, each team was able to get on the board relatively early. With one out in the bottom of the third inning, Matt Downs and Gorkys Hernandez hit back-to-back doubles to give the Zephyrs (38-38) a 1-0 lead. It was the first time during the four-game set the Zephyrs scored before the seventh inning.

The RedHawks (38-34) responded in their next at-bat in the fourth inning. Brett Wallace sent a two-run homer to right-center field to put Oklahoma City in the lead.

The home run was Wallace's team-leading 11th of the season and extended his current hitting streak to 11 games. It was also the team's first home run in five games.

The Zephyrs answered with a home run of their own in the bottom of the fifth, courtesy of Downs. The former RedHawk sent a line drive over the left field fence to knot the score at 2-2.

With the game tied 2-2 in sixth, Donovan Solano led off the inning and sent a high fly ball down the left field line that just nicked the foul pole for a solo home run, putting the Zephyrs back in front.

The RedHawks only had one base runner after the homer and never put a runner in scoring position following the fourth inning.

RedHawks pitcher Asher Wojciechowski tossed his first career complete game, albeit in the loss. Wojciechowski (3-3) went a career-high eight innings, allowing three runs and six hits. He struck out seven batters without any walks. The right-hander fired 103 pitches, 76 for strikes.

The win went to New Orleans reliever James Leverton (2-1), who retired both hitters he faced in the sixth inning. Chris Hatcher recorded the final four outs to earn his league-leading 23rd save.

With the loss, the RedHawks had to settle for a split in the four-game series and still have not won consecutive games in June.

The RedHawks return home to face the Omaha Storm Chasers Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. to begin what will be a six-game series over four days.
