When skeletal remains were discovered on a rugged hillside near Quinton in eastern Pittsburg County in December 2012, investigators had few clues and very little to help solve the mystery of how the man died, how he got there or his identity.

An investigator with the Muskogee County Sheriff's Office told News On 6, the remains consisted of a skull and an arm bone.

An OSBI forensic artist made a facial reconstruction from the remains, in an attempt to identify the man.

Meanwhile, U.S. Marshals and the Muskogee County Sheriff's Office were seeking Peterson for beating and robbing his grandfather in 2009. His grandfather survived the attack. According to court records, Peterson was charged with assault and battery by means or force likely to produce death, robbery by force or fear, grand larceny, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

He was also wanted for failure to register as a sex offender. Peterson pleaded no contest to raping and sodomizing a 7-year-old girl in 2000.

Investigators said in 2012, Peterson was last seen in the Longtown area in 2009.
