Consumer Watch: Who Gets Scammed

Posted: Updated:
OKLAHOMA CITY -

It's a phrase our Consumer Watch Team hears all too often after someone is ripped off. "I should have known better."

Yet, the Federal Trade Commission says 25.6 million Americans are scammed each year, including thousands of Oklahomans.

There are certain types of people con artists target with their schemes.

* Risk Takers - People who live on the edge are six times more likely to take the bait on a "too good to be true" offer.

* Anyone who engages in risky purchases - like from telemarketers or responding to unsolicited emails from an unknown company. They are 4 times more likely.

* Experiencing difficult times, like a death in the family or divorce? You're three times more likely to fall for a scam.

* Elderly - since they're usually vulnerable and trustworthy.

The secret to not falling for a scam is being patient. Con artists make us feel in a hurry to make a decision, so the more patient we are,  the less likely we are to fall for their trap.

Most popular scams:

* Weight Loss Programs

* Fake Prizes

* Buyers Clubs

* Internet Services

* Work At Home

The FTC says 1/3 of scams are internet based so before you jump into an investment or buy something that seems too good to pass up, do your homework. Ask questions, read the fine print and steer clear of unfamiliar companies.
