A member of the greatest generation was honored Thursday with the highest award the country of France can give.

World War II veteran, Sgt. Paul Andert was named a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor.

It's in recognition for his service and the role American soldiers played in liberating France from Nazi Germany.

Andert went into the service when he was 17 and got out when he was 22. In that time, he was wounded twice and returned to his outfit both times. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

"It means a lot to me this way: it goes for the guys that didn't make it. So many of them are gone now. There are so few that's left," Andert said.

Andert was given the award at the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art.
